Recycling Sinners

If the Ted Haggard story tells us anything, it tells us that we don't know what to do with fallen people in the church.

We're not alone…there is a historical basis for our ineptitude.

The church in Corinth had a fellow living in blatant public sexual immorality…and they didn't care.

The text seems to indicate that they not only didn't care, but that they were unwilling to hear any criticism of their attitude.

Paul fixed that…

“¶ It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife.
And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.
¶ For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing.
When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus,
you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.”
(1 Corinthians 5:1–5 ESV)

So…they threw the rogue out on his hindquarters…and refused to let him back in.

This is sounding really familiar.

Ҧ For I made up my mind not to make another painful visit to you.
For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained?
And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all.
For I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.
¶ Now if anyone has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but in some measure—not to put it too severely—to all of you.
For such a one, this punishment by the majority is enough,
so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.
So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him.
For this is why I wrote, that I might test you and know whether you are obedient in everything.
Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ,
so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.”
(2 Corinthians 2:1–11 ESV)

Corinth had real issues…they didn't want to discipline, then once they disciplined they wanted to make it permanent.

Things haven't changed much in 2000 years.

Paul acknowledged the damage that this fellow had done to the community, then affirms his repentance.

Note what is to take place now;

"you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.
So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him. "

The template seems to be the following.

1. Remove the unrepentant sinner according to Matt:18

2. Restore the repentant sinner and affirm our love for him or her.

There's a place in the church for fallen people…is there room in our hearts?

Just thinking out loud…

2010 In Review

I don't want to cheat my dear readers out of knowing what the future holds so here is the coming year in review.

You can save time by just keeping an eye on your daily horoscope in the local paper.

Cindy Jacobs gives us this rejoinder first;

This is the word given through a compilation of the prophetic releases and consensus of the Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders (ACPE). There are differing variables that can affect the timing and/or coming to pass of these words:

1.    All prophecy not contained in Scripture is conditional.
2.    A prophecy may take longer than one calendar year to come to pass. Some [will] take many years to fulfill.
3.    It is possible that prophetic warnings will cause either the person or the nation to repent and so turn away the judgment prophesied. Biblically, this happened when Jonah prophesied to Nineveh and the city repented, causing God to relent.

Key Scripture Passage for 2010

"Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place" (2 Cor. 2:14, NKJV).

2010 is the year in which we will win. This is a year to triumph in Christ and diffuse the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.

2010 is the year to wake up. It is time to wake up and see both what the enemy is trying to do and what God wants to do through us. This is a year when God will help us "see" in a supernatural way those things that we have felt as if we could not understand.

The Year of the Wind

2010 will be a year of the wind. There is a new Pentecost about to be poured out upon God's people who are hungering for more of Him. The wind of the Holy Spirit is going to blow us in the right direction and into the place that God wants us to be. We will see glorious manifestations of His divine power with signs and wonders.

Many nations will feel the impact of this mighty wind. Indonesia will once again be swept over by the Holy Spirit, along with Thailand, Poland, North Korea, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. Alaska will see a move of the Holy Spirit among the Native Alaskans.

New wells of revival will break out, and many will drink from the wells of salvation.

Many will teach on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We are going to need to see them all function in the church in this day to fulfill our mission.

We will see a special increase of the word of wisdom. The word of wisdom is supernatural insight into what to do that will secure our future. The manifestation of this gift will be such that from one moment to the next we will have the plan or "road map" on what we are to do for our future.

Third Great Awakening

We believe that the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that came on November 11, 2009, in Kansas City signaled the beginning of a Third Great Awakening that we prophesied would come to America and the world. November 11th was the day the Pilgrims made covenant with God in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Many intercessors across the nation are crying out to God for the nation to once again become "a city set on a hill." If we continue to pray and call out to God, the nation will shift.

Evangelism

Many churches will wake up and evangelize the lost in their cities and nations. Thousands will be swept into the kingdom of God through new "power evangelism" movements in which people [will be] shown by supernatural means that God is real.

Churches who haven't baptized in years will begin to see many people come to Christ. Dead churches will become resurrected under the fire and power of the Holy Spirit's working, and many [who are] lost will be swept into the kingdom of God.

Breaking Debt Cycles

Key Scripture passage: "The spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed" (Luke 4:18).

We felt that the Lord had given us an "eye of the storm" time period to get out of debt. In fact, as we discussed the many prophetic warnings about a second economic shaking, we felt that the Lord in His mercy had extended a period of grace to His people because many were not ready for another shaking.

Supernatural ability to get out of debt is being released. If you will start paying your debts, even in very small amounts, God will supernaturally get behind your efforts and help you get out of debt.

Eradication of Systemic Poverty

It is time to fulfill the first message Jesus preached and bring justice to the poor. God spoke to us about social justice missionaries—[people] who are called to help eliminate systemic poverty. There is a marriage of righteousness and justice, and God will raise up those who are called to fight issues such as human trafficking as well as poverty.

The call will marry its mandate to win the lost to its justice mandate. Churches will begin to model taking care of the poor in their midst, as well as putting systems into place to help teach their people how to get out of debt.

Clash of Kingdoms

Just as [He did] the year before, the Lord spoke to us about the great "clash of kingdoms" taking place around the world—the kingdom of God and the empire-building spirit of Islam. Satan is on the march to build empires.

Be aware and watch and see what is around you. Home-grown terrorism will be on the rise. There is a move toward "civilization Jihad" around the globe in countries that have democratic rule.

Judgment and Testing

Key Scripture passage: "So Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, ‘Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then let our appearance be examined before you, and the appearance of the young men who eat the portion of the king's delicacies; and as you see fit, so deal with your servants.' So he consented with them in this matter, and tested them ten days. And at the end of ten days their features appeared better and fatter in flesh than all the young men who ate the portion of the king's delicacies" (Dan. 1:11-16).

Daniel and his friends were tested for 10 days, and then they had favor with the king. They were found to be 10 times better than the others. This will happen for those who are faithful to stand in times of testing. In the end, you will rise above all the others and advance.

Nehemiah

Ten times words were spoken to stop Nehemiah's work on the wall. Do not be intimidated by the seeming onslaught of the evil one. Finish the task that God has put before you. God spoke to us over and over in our meeting that we are not to be intimidated in the coming season of conflict and testing.

Worship Activism

Key Scripture passage: "And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying: ‘Praise the Lord, for His mercy endures forever.' Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated. For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another" (2 Chron. 20:21-23).

We will win through worship. It is the key to triumph! There is a marriage of worship and activism taking place [that will cause] the church [to] march and sing, just as in the days of Martin Luther King Jr.

New battle hymns will be written along the lines of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." His truth is marching on, and there is a call for biblical truth through worship.

Worship will break open the heavens, and young people will heed the call to be "musicianaries" and go to the ends of the earth to start 24/7 houses of worship.

Great joy will break out in the midst of worship as God "laughs" at His enemies through His people (see Ps. 2; 149).

Great Conflict

For each kingdom advance this year we will see the enemy "pushing back" and stirring up conflict around us. Do not be afraid of confrontation and conflict. Fight intimidation. Run toward the Goliaths in your life, and remember that you are called to triumph in this year.

Activism will manifest as new armies of the Lord are being raised up. Find your place and let your voice be heard.

Over the next years in the United States a new, third political party will arise. The Lord is preparing His leadership for this party, which will come out of the citizens of the United States groaning under the corruption of the old guard. Many leaders are being tested and tried in the fire right now who will take leadership in due time, for it will begin not so much as a political party but [as] a movement. The movement will become a party in time.

Season of Transition

This is a season of transition for the body of Christ. For the United States, it will be a time of transition for either good or evil. The nation is on the "cusp" of remaining a civilization as we know it. It is up to this generation to see it go back to the original vision of our founders.

A woman has to dilate to 10 centimeters to give birth. The years 2010 and beyond will be a time of intense pressure but will result in the birthing of many new things.

God is also going to rearrange His people for the coming days' work. There are some who will make sudden geographic moves. Others will transition in their jobs and careers. There will be special grace poured out upon those who are obedient to allow God to reposition His troops. For those who are not making a move but are seeing people that you love make changes, God will also help you transition into this new season and send new help for you.

Transition into the new season, get your vision and house in order. Make sure that you are properly aligned for the new battles ahead.

Be Prepared

Key Scripture passages: Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins (Matt. 25:1-13); Parable of the Talents (Matt. 25:14-30).

Rearrange and "rightsize" for victories and breakthroughs. Become more focused in your core purpose. Live a simpler life. Do not hoard what another person can use. This is the time to share and take care of each other. Make sure that the body of Christ can arise with the call of the bridegroom, as the five virgins who were ready [were able to do].

We must begin to think more as a community than simply as individuals. Put your house in order and arrange for the next season. Mobility is the key in the kingdom today. Many who are not rightsized will see the loss of buildings, lands and so on. If this has happened to you, God will help you begin again.

There is a season of pruning for growth. The pruning can, and at times will, seem painful, but trust that God is working all things together for your good.

What did you teach?

What did you learn?

Did you hear the Gospel?

The Calvinist will acknowledge the Orthodox today…as they focus on Matt 25 and showing mercy to those in need.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,
I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’
Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?
And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?
And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’
And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
¶ “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’
Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’
Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’
And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.””
(Matthew 25:34–46 ESV)

"The Sunday of the Last Judgment or Meatfare Sunday is the third Sunday using the Lenten Triodion, the liturgical book used in the services of Great Lent. It is the Sunday after the Sunday of the Prodigal Son and Sunday before Forgiveness Sunday. This is the third week of the pre-Lenten start of the Easter cycle of worship in the Orthodox Church.
This Sunday is called Meatfare Sunday since it is traditionally the last day before Easter for eating meat. Orthodox Christians observe a fast from meat all week, but still eat dairy products and eggs till the start of Great Lent.
The Gospel reading this Sunday remembers Christ's parable of the Last Judgment (Matthew 25:31-46). This adds to the previous pre-Lent Sundays and teaches that it is not enough to see Jesus, to see ourselves as we are, and to come home to God as his prodigal sons. The Church teaches that, in addition, one must also be God’s sons by following Christ, his only-begotten divine Son, and by seeing Christ in everyone and by serving Christ through them."

Prayer & Praise: Feb 7-13

images-1The Kingdom and the Power
As music can express the whole range of human feelings, so our Lord’s pattern prayer covers the whole range of concerns with which life confronts the Christian disciple. Praise for our redemption (Father), adoration of God’s transcendent greatness (in heaven), zeal for his glory (hallowed be thy name), longing for his triumph (thy kingdom come), and self-dedication to him (thy will be done) are all expressed in the first half; in terms of the common analysis of the elements of prayer as Adoration, Consecration, Thanksgiving and Supplication (making the mnemonic A-C-T-S), all save the last are now covered. Then the supplications of the second half have expressed our reliance on God for material needs (give us … our daily bread), our repentance over failures in faithfulness and our renouncing of mercilessness as a way of life (forgive us … as we forgive), and our sense of weakness in face of the forces of our spiritual foes (lead us not into temptation, but deliver us). Now, finally, following the traditional form of the prayer, we are led back to praise.
The doxology with which, following the older versions, we round off the Lord’s Prayer is not in the best manuscripts. Nevertheless, it is in the best tradition! Doxologies (that is, acts of praise to God for his glory) pop up all through the Bible, and we saw before how in personal devotion praise and prayer grow out of, lead into, and stir up each other. Need felt and need met are their respective mainsprings, and praise for what God is, and does, is the strong support of hope in what he can, and will, do. So the more you praise, the more vigor you will have for prayer; and the more you pray, the more matter you will have for praise.

Prayer and Praise
Prayer and praise are like a bird’s two wings: with both working, you soar; with one out of action you are earthbound. But birds should not be earthbound, nor Christians praiseless. The clauses “who art in heaven” at the start and “as it is in heaven” in the middle are pauses for praise in the Lord’s Prayer’s flow, and if this closing doxology is not from Jesus’ lips it certainly reflects his mind.
Praise is linked to prayer here by the conjunction “for”: “for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory … ” The connection of thought is that we ask our heavenly Father for provision, pardon, and protection with great confidence, since we know that for him to give this to his children on the one hand is within his capacity, and on the other is in line with the character he shows when he deals with men—that is, his glory. This, therefore, is an actual instance of praise for God’s power and glory coming in to undergird prayer for the fruits of both.

Kingdom and Power
Kingdom and power, as ascribed to God in this doxology, are two words expressing a single composite thought. (Grammarians call this idiom hendiadys: it is common in ancient literature.) The thought is of omnipotent control. Kingdom is used as in Psalm 103:19, “His kingdom rules over all”: it denotes God’s all-embracing mastery of the order of creation which is presupposed by the petition that God’s kingdom in the other sense, the order of redemption touching everything, may “come.” Satan, the prime example of how sin breeds cunning but saps intelligence and rots the mind, does not accept that the Lord is king in this basic sense, and would dismiss this doxology—indeed, all doxologies—as false; but Christians know better, and praise God accordingly.
Power is the actual mastery which God’s rule shows: not, then, naked arbitrary power, like that of a tornado, or a rogue elephant, or a dotty dictator, but unconquerable beneficence, triumphantly fulfilling purposes of mercy and loving-kindness “to us and to all men.” It is the power by which God is good to all, and rescued Israel from Egypt, and raised Jesus Christ from the dead (Ephesians 1:19ff., etc.).
Psalms proclaiming God as the invincible gracious King (Psalms such as 47, 93, 97, 145, for a start) form the best exposition of “the kingdom and the power” in this doxology. Read them, ponder them, get them under your skin and into your heart—and join the Christian glee club! “It is good to sing praises to our God; for he is gracious … ” (Psalm 147:1).

TGIF

There are times and places where the Christian faith is a great, troubling, mystery to me.

Two of my favorite brothers are very sick with life threatening illnesses.

Matt Chandler and Michael Spencer, the "IMonk".

Neither has a very good  prognosis.

Chandler has produced some incredible videos of the early part of his journey and they are pictures of courage and inspiration.

Michael is suffering greatly and is almost unable to write.

It's almost more than I can handle to watch.

I understand the reality of sickness and death in a fallen world…I hate it but I understand it.

The hard part for me is that on any given day thousands of people are praying for both of them.

It's not just them…we pray here, too.

We pray for each other and hundreds of silent readers pray with our prayer thread every day.

We don't get many affirmative answers.

You would think with that many voices in the ear of the Father, things would be different.

My place of mental sanctuary is my belief in the complete sovereignty of God and my faith that His sovereignty is directed by His boundless love.

Still…life hurts like hell.

Sometimes we need to talk about that…sometimes embracing the mystery isn't enough.

Today is one of those days…

Last Thoughts On TH

Whatever you believe about Ted Haggards restoration, you have to give him credit for a couple of things.

He confessed.

He publicly repented.

He made himself available for questioning and dialog.

Let me ask those of you who have been wounded in church battles a question.

How different would you feel about your faith if the people that wounded you did likewise?

Can you imagine the difference it would have made if, instead of hiring a PR firm, Skip Heitzig would have confessed, repented, and come on here to face the people he hurt?

What if…in humility he had chosen to wash Pete Nelsons feet as Haggard is said to have done to his accuser?

I'll tell you what…a whole city would have been healed and may have even experienced revival.

What if the same had happened in your situation?

Whether you believe in Haggards repentance or not, what he's modeling  is so powerful and life giving that it cannot be ignored.

I've been writing this blog for a long time now and from the first scandals to the ones we're dealing with this very day, humility combined with confession, repentance and forgiveness would have healed them all.

Because it has rarely happened, the ones wounding stay in their sin and the wounded never really heal.

Ted may not be completely sincere yet, but he's telling us who he wants to be.

The others are telling us who they really are.

I have to risk believing Haggard because how we respond to him will be a signal to others who need to do what he's doing.

I have to risk believing Haggard because what I think about him is a refection of my own heart and my own sin and my own humility.

I have to risk believing Haggard because it's the biblical thing to do.

We may get burned again…but we will do so having done the right thing in the eyes of God.

Ted Haggard Responds to The PP

I asked Ted Haggard to respond to our thread on Gayle Haggard's book.

He graciously complied and the following is his response. He also interacts with us in the comments section.

Thank you for your comments. There are a few facts that might be helpful:

1. The New Life Church bylaws that were in effect in November, 2006 are published in "The Life-Giving Church" and thus available to all of you. You don't need to guess about the role of the Overseers, etc.

2. I am guilty of sin, but probably not the sins you think. Gayle's book talks about the four lie detector tests I took all demonstrating that I had not had an affair with Mike Jones, had not had sexual contact with anyone in the church other than my wife or had ever groomed anyone in the church for sexual contact. I have never had a homosexual "affair" or "relationship" in my life. Mike Jones' only lie detector test in November 2006 indicated deception, and he has since refused to take any more. All four of my lie detector tests demonstrated truthfulness.

I have not pressed this because I believe that since I violated one part of the law, that I was guilty of violating all of it, never dreaming that certain members of the body of Christ would joyfully assume that I was guilty of every accusation and become my accuser in order to "protect the church". This will be discussed in future years, I'm sure, in order to help us be more redemptive.

3. Throughout this thread are judgments based on projection and speculation. This is a major problem. You assume things about me, my wife, the church, the bylaws, the sin, etc. I have publicly repented of my sins and used the media because the church wasn't accessable to me and the media offered itself as a communications tool. I've never paid to be on a program nor have I ever been paid to be on a show. I believe public responsibility and repentance is important.

4. I am not currently ministering in Colorado Springs. We had two prayer meetings in our home prior to Thanksgiving to meet with friends for prayer. We are actually gone most of the time filling invitations to speak.

5. I have not, nor am I going to, ask any of you or anyone else to validate me. I understand the risk that would create for your reputation. If people or organizations do chose to validate me, it's their business and I do appreciate it, but it's not in response to my request. But I have not asked the church, or any member of the church, or any denomination to validate me. I'm sorry you felt as though my public repentance was a request on my part for your validation. That was not my intent.

Upon reflection, I really don't believe you thought my public appearances were a personal request for your validation. Reading your comments actually felt like you said that in order to have an excuse to publicly state your rejection and judgment. Thus proof once again that we are all equally in need of redemption.

6. I have not asked to be licensed, ordained, by any church or religious institution. Should people in the public contact me and ask for help, I respond as best I can as any person would. I do make it a point not to respond as a pastor or spiritual leader, simply as a fellow human who is grateful to be redeemed.

7. Who is qualified to minister the Gospel? My guess is some of you assume you are, but you publicly said things here and other places without checking with primary sources or knowing the facts. You might have violated different Scriptures than I did, but your violation reveals your need of forgiveness and grace, just as I do. Could it be that you are a sinner just like I am, and that any ministry that God gives you is by His grace, not because of your righteousness. I think that when we inspect ourselves in light of his holiness, no one qualifies, and certainly no one qualifies to disqualify another equally sinful person. Maybe we can all use a little dose of humility.

Hope this helps. God bless.
