Here and there

The book review and discussion for Listening to the Beliefs of Emerging Churches is coming up and I am planning on posting it Wednesday or Thursday.

Meanwhile, here's some stuff to tide you over:

LifeChurch had a very unusual Easter service in one of its venues.

The Manga Bible.

What one guy thinks we'll be arguing over for the next couple of decades.

Bob Franquiz's Calvary Fellowship got written about in the Miami Herald (with photo of the front page).

Finally, Phil Johnson took on Dan Kimball (who responded in the comments thread). And Kimball also responded on his blog. And Johnson clarified

Brian Schulenberg at first glance has done a great job distilling some loaded issues…

We have seen virtually all these issues emerge on this blog.

    Well done… and then some.

I guess the list could be called…

Faith is becoming short-sighted and self-situated.
Jesus is in the mix but not the substance. Today’s thinking will become a roller coaster ride with no seat belts.
    I don’t want a free ticket.

THY WORD IS TRUTH. That settles it.

“Top Ten Theological Issues for the Church in the Next Ten Years?”

They’re all side issues. Everything always comes back to secks.

That Second Life Easter thing is very strange…

I should start a Second Life home church movement…

    Buster,

    Secks?

    is that sects or sex?

Or is secks something my mother did not tell me?

    Dread,

Secks is inappropriate for public discussion on a blog everyone can read :)

On the other hand, virtual churches in Second Life, the Magna Bible, Bob Franquiz, one guy’s take on what the church will argue about in 2017 and Phil Johnson arguing with Dan Kimball over Mark Driscoll are appropriate for all ages

MLD, sorry that I accused you of being a Padres Fan last night! Oh well, at least I protected my identity, hopefully I didn’t cause you too much pain

Great photos, Scott H. You have a nice looking family. Cute little guy getting a haircut. Looks like everyone had a great time! Good you were able to get away and joy for a few days!

Miami Herald article says, ”Preaching is one form of communicating, but it is not the best way,” he said. “We want to be teaching people more holistically, engaging culture, engaging art, engaging the different senses.”

I’ve known a few CC pastors who are stiff when it comes to engaging people in their culture. No Technical stuff, no projections, keep the volume way low, no drums, no art, no special dramatic presentations, focus on my lecturing, etc…. Sometime they remind me of Daffy Duck stomping on Bugs yelling, “It’s mine, mine all mine!” What really is it they are afraid of? What do they think will happen? I believe this attitude can cause a ministry to become introverted and centered on a celebrity pastor, rather than on relationships within the body and with Jesus. It is always refreshing to see a pastor ready to take risks.

It is interesting to me that Johnson and Kimball tango the same blog dance we witness here daily…provoke, clarify, retaliate, offer olive branch, make nice, promise to take it up next thread…provoke…

the Manga Bible interests me because it could be a useful tool to reintroduce biblical literacy/familiarity to many adolescents and pre-adolescents. The artform is accessible and interesting so kids would find it readable, especially kids outside the church who aren’t warned against anything outside the bounds of KJV/Scofield. Obviously it is a cliff-notes approach, but it would reintroduce characters, accounts, and scope of history that is sorely lacking in social circles today.
